3Com ended 1998 with sales and profits up for the second fiscal quarter, and a joint venture with telecoms equipment maker Siemens. Profits before merger related charges increased 54% from $86.7 million (#57.2 million) to $133.4 million (#80.4 million), or $0.36 (22p) per share, for the quarter, beating analysts' expectations of $0.31 (19p) per share. The new joint venture company, still awaiting a name, will develop and sell LAN telephony and multimedia products to enable businesses to run voice, video and data calls over their LANs, lowering their overall telecoms costs, 3Com claims. The companies expect to deliver products this year.
