Most of the summer?s top 25 Web sites are those offering sweepstakes and incentives.
According to figures from Net Ratings, other sites that reported the largest growth in visitor numbers include NBC?s portal site Snap and Microsoft?s Hot Mail.
Net Ratings compared the ?reach? of Web sites in May and July. ?Reach? is defined as the percentage of all US Web users who visit a particular site at least once during a given period.
The two Web boomers were online lottery megalotto.com (up 190 per cent over the period to a 6.4 per cent reach) and bonusmail.com, which mainly features commercial promotions (up 188 per cent to a 10.5 per cent reach).
Numbers three and four, uproar.com and snap.com, grew to 5.3 per cent and 5.4 per cent, respectively.
Predictably, most of the strong growth came from a comparatively small base. But some larger sites also managed to grow strongly over the two month period. Notably, Microsoft?s free email service Hot Mail saw its reach increase by 50 per cent. Around 19.5 percent of Internet users in the US visited hotmail.com in July. Digital?s Altavista search engine scored very similar numbers, growing 48 per cent to a 19.6 per cent reach.
