IBM has topped up its System/390 line of mainframes with a model that increases the range's top speed by 10 per cent.
Called the RY4, the new high end, Cmos-based model will be available from 2 December and sits above the RX4 machine, launched in September. The increase in power is enabled by a new technique that slightly speeds up the cycle time of the Cmos microprocessors. However, the chips will not be used in the other machines in the range.
While both the RY4 and the RX4 are available as 10-way models the RY4 increases the performance rating of the top model from 395 to 430 MVS/RPPs (MVS Relative Process Performance, an IBM-specific measure similar to Mips).
The latest machine increases the number of models in the G3 Parallel Enterprise Server family - the Cmos implementation of the S/390 architecture - to 14. IBM began using Cmos technology to build its parallel mainframes in 1994, when it promised to double the performance of the range every 18 months. It had previously used bipolar technology.
Nick Drabble, IBM UK marketing manager for the System/390 business, said: ?Cmos technology gives customers a 97 per cent saving in power and maintenance over the old bipolar machines. Customers also see a 94 per cent saving in physical space and a 30 per cent throughput improvement.?
