A company that has developed 'clickable' video told the Comdex Venture Forum that interest in its technology is growing.
Regarded by many attendees as the most interesting of 12 companies that presented at the Forum - which is set up to bring start-ups together with venture capitalists - Veon has technology that lets users click on video in the same way as they click on text today.
The video can be running on a PC or television. Interactive entertainment, news, commercials and ecommerce are applications on which the start-up is focusing.
According to the Forum organiser, Veon's vice president of marketing and business development Adam Stock was swamped by potential investors after his presentation. However, the VCs were told that the company had just been promised more than $5 million in funding.
The start-up provides the development tools and servers that can give television content many of the advantages of the Web, including personalisation, interaction, and programming on demand.
Veon this month is shipping its Activation Suite, its solution for creating database driven personalised multimedia presentations for the Internet. The Suite reduces the development time and cost required to build and deploy streaming media applications with its scripting and template architecture.
Inhibiting Veon, which moved from its roots in Israel to the multimedia haven of San Francisco, is the lack of broadband networking and the company believes it will not achieve its future for some years to come. "Our biggest impediment is the delay in broadband. We don't provide real value until quality video can take up at least a quarter of the screen," Stock said.
