Netscape, itself the subject of many a takeover rumour in 1996, has ended the year with a firm denial of market speculation that it is set to buy Compuserve. Rumours of a possible takeover of the online service provider began cirulating at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas in October, but were dismissed on Tuesday this week by Netscape chief executive Jim Barksdale, who commented: "They're not even in our space." But he repeated his statement of last week that the company was interested in what he described as "appropriate acquisitions".
