Upcoming.org offers a free service that lets users post listings about upcoming events to its website. Listings range from professional conferences to picnics.
The site was founded in 2003, and is run by a team of three developers who will all join Yahoo. The founders run the site mostly as a side project in their free time.
Upcoming.org aims to move beyond the standard online calendar, adding a social element to the service that will present the user with events tailored to their personal interests.
"We now have the freedom, resources and support to pursue the event space on a wholly different level," said Leonard Lin, a web programmer with the project, on his blog.
"Events are a particularly exciting area of human knowledge chock full of rich local, social and temporal data," he said.
"People want to find out what's going on near them, know what their friends are seeing and doing, and plan their outings."
