Online software component distributor Componentsource has agreed to resell EDS? Com based financial components to plug a gap in the front office market not filled by packaged applications. Bill Wilkerson, chief technology officer for EDS? financial services unit, said that finance organisations believe the main way to stay competitive is to deliver new front office services, but that packaged applications do not supply the special functionality they need. EDS? components will initially cover deposit, investment and lending calculations, however, and prices will start as low as $500. "The true value comes from the process glue organisations like ours bring that support specific processes. Building finance components like interest calculations is hard. Customers want a single source and this is a good way to make that special functionality widely available," Wilkerson claimed. Although the components will initially be written in Microsoft?s Com, he said: "If we see significant demand for Corba based components then we'll provide those, but Com is where the demand is today." Adrian Robinson, Componentsource?s managing director, said: "With some 40 to 60 components scheduled for release over the next 60 days, this represents the largest single component release programme we've done."
