The first intensive Y2K test in the aviation industry will take place this weekend at Denver International Airport.
Denver airport was specifically chosen for the tests because its computers can be divided an flights tracked in parallel. One half of the systems will have their clocks fast forwarded to January 1, 2000.
The radar systems will track commercial flights and a Lear Jet flying over Colorado. For reasons of safety, the planes will also be tracked by computers not involved in the Y2K test.
The Federal Aviation Administration does not anticpate any problems with Denver?s Y2K tests or that planes will crash due to the millennium bug.
The US government wanted all mission critical computers within its operation to be tested by 31 March. The FAA missed the deadline, with only a 72 per cent Y2K compliancy completion rate. The FAA now claims all its Y2K work will be completed by 30 June.
