Security resellers with skills from existing vendor relationships will be offered fast-track training by Symantec as it attempts to grow its UK reseller base.
The security software and appliance company has introduced a vendor neutral reseller training and testing programme.
The move is part of the vendor's strategy to increase its 33 UK Enterprise Solutions and Security Partners by at least 20 per cent over the next 12 months.
Resellers that pass tests in vendor neutral security infrastructure will be offered free Symantec-specific training.
The programmes cover Symantec firewalls, security management, intrusion detection and virus control.
According to Russell Smith, Symantec's vice president of channels and sales operations for EMEA, resellers can use skills picked up from other vendor programmes to shortcut certain elements of the new programme.
"The vendor neutral stuff can be taken up by other vendors," he said. "We have listened to our partners who always complain about the costs involved in getting certification from different vendors. We are reducing the time and costs."
The training is free to the company's existing Security and Solutions Partners. New partners will be able to pay for the training they require and then move on to the Symantec-specific training for free if they pass the tests.
David Ellis, director of e-security at distributor Unipalm, explained that many of the skills in the security space are transferable between vendors.
"What is the point of resellers paying thousands of pounds for training when they already have many of the skills?" he asked.
Ellis added that the programme could also prove popular in the channel. "Symantec obviously wants more resellers out of this, but it is a good idea," he said.
Neil Barrett, technical director at Information Risk Management, agreed that the processes involved in firewall, intrusion detection and network management are the same despite different interfaces.
"I cannot see any reason why this is not a good idea as long as the resellers get exposure to multi-vendor products during training," he said.
