Nokia has unveiled five new mobiles, including its flagship first "media category" handset, the 7700.
The tri-band 7700 looks more like a handheld games console than a phone. It features a camera and high-spec touchscreen (with pen input) and is capable of showing 65,000 colours at a resolution of 640x320 pixels.
The device also has full web access through an Opera browser, and will support access to radio and TV content using an IP datacast receiver accessory that takes advantage of a new network standard called Digital Broadcast Video - Handheld.
Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president at Nokia Mobile Phones, said the 7700 combined with 3G technology would deliver on the promises made by Nokia's TV ads from 2000, which showed bus travellers watching films on their mobile.
"The big change we've talked about for the past two years has now happened," he said.
"We believe more people want to be entertained on the go," added Ilkka Raiskinen, senior vice president at Nokia Mobile Phones.
The 7700 has 64MB of internal memory, an expansion slot, and uses new Nokia series 90 software built on top of the Symbian operating system. It weighs 180g and is expected to sell at an unsubsidised price of €450 to €500.
The new lightweight 6820 (around €350) and larger 6810 (€250) feature 'flip-out' qwerty keyboards for easier messaging and are targeted at business users.
After being somewhat outpaced in the fashion stakes by competitors, Nokia has also made a stab at the style market.
The new 7200 "has emotional appeal", according to Vanjoki. Expected to sell for a cool €450, the device includes fabric covers, a wrist strap and a pouch. The covers seem Japanese-influenced in design.
Completing the new line-up is the classic-look tri-band 6230, offering integrated MMS, MP3 and 65,000 colour camera with Edge, bluetooth and GSM/GPRS capabilities, for around €400 at unsubsidised rates.
