The largest US smartcard trial, sponsored by Visa, Mastercard, Chase Manhattan and Citibank, and involving more than 600 merchants, is to end next month.
The four sponsors claimed that the trial had achieved its objectives even though most consumers did not reload electronic cash on to their cards and two-thirds of the merchants dropped out during the 14-month period.
The banks issued 100,000 cards loaded with ecash, allowing the merchants to accept payment from a single smartcard reader that worked with both rival smartcard systems, Visa Cash and Mondex.
