Compaq chief executive Eckhard Pfeiffer opened the company's Innovate Forum in Houston Tuesday on a positive note, despite the company issuing a profit warning four days earlier.
In a keynote speech, Pfeiffer denied that the PC sales slowdown and pricing pressures that the company had blamed for the warning would have a negative affect on the rest of the year and said he expected the company to grow profitably throughout 1999.
He commented: "While market conditions will continue to be competitive, we fully intend to expand our business and grow market share profitably in 1999."
Pfeiffer outlined Compaq's enterprise strategy which he called "Non Stop ebusiness" and which he described as central to the company's goal to be the Internet computing leader.
He explained that Compaq is focussing on this strategy because customers' ability to fully utilise the Internet represents one of the most important challenges for businesses today.
"It is clear that the Internet will become the dominant means of doing business worldwide," said Pfeiffer. "And to succeed in the Internet age customers must adopt to a new paradigm of speed, global competitiveness and ecommerce where continuous connections to customers, suppliers and employees are absolutely essential and where your competition is just a click away."
He added that the Non Stop ebusiness strategy is aimed at delivering the highest levels of "continuous commerce" and features services, products and technology, although he did not give any details.
"Our mission is to enable our customers to achieve competitive advantage by delivering robust, non stop ebusiness solutions to more levels of the organisation, more affordably than any other computing company," he said.
