Analysts at the Gartner Group have warned end users that notebooks from Toshiba and Compaq may be subject to problems - but adds that IBM seems to have solved most of the glitches with its own models.
The warnings follows a report earlier this year in which Gartner recommended that end users should be wary of choosing Compaq notebooks. The new report, from the mobile business strategies group, poses the question: ?Which notebook vendors will most successfully meet mobile business requirements??
It says: ?In 1996, we received many complaints about IBM?s lack of availability and lengthy product repair times. IBM has erased most of these complaints and appears relatively free of problems.?
But Gartner has harsh words for Compaq and Toshiba. It says: ?By contrast, Compaq and Toshiba, IBM?s chief competitors, have faced a rash of issues from problem products to lack of spare parts, respectively.?
According to Gartner, IBM leads the industry with feedback and advisory mechanisms. ?With these solid processes in place, we expect IBM to remain a leader in the notebook industry through 2002,? it continues.
But IBM has other problems, Gartner says. Its bread and butter was the high end of the notebook market, but that is expected to be flat or negative in growth. Midrange and low end notebooks are now the real growth area, Gartner concludes.
Mike Lunch, UK general manager of the IBM PC Company, claimed that the report meant that his company?s products were ?rock solid?. Compaq and Toshiba could not be reached for comment.
* As reported yesterday, IBM has reduced prices on many of its range of Thinkpad notebooks in the UK. The high end Thinkpad 765 falls by 10 per cent to #4,179, while the Thinkpad 310-200 drops by 19 per cent to #1,182 and the 310-100 shows the biggest reduction by 24 per cent to #977.
