Cirrus has introduced a low-power system-on-a-chip aimed at doubling the battery lifespan of handheld computers.
Mike Sanchez-Parodi, vice president of Cirrus Europe, said the EP7211 chip, which operates at 74MHz, does not match the performance of faster-speed chips but will extend the battery life of handheld PCs. For example, he said, the popular Psion V's battery would last 30 days, from the present 15.
Based on an ARM 720T processor, the chip requires 170mW to run at full speed and includes 37.5Kb of SRAM.
The EP7211 is an upgrade on Cirrus' 7111 chip - used in a range of personal digital assistants and smart phones - and will support both Windows CE and EPOC 32 operating systems.
The chip has been designed for a new generation of purpose-built limited-task products. IDC has predicted that such products would exceed PC numbers and reach 20 million by 2002.
Parodi said Cirrus was also hoping to develop higher-performance versions of the chip, which will be available by the end of this year as a 208-pin LQFP (Low-profile Quad Flat Packages) for $14.95 (£9.29) and a 256-lead PBGA (Plastic Ball Grid Array) package for $17.95 (£11.15).
