Two of MCI?s three suitors posted their respective financial results this week and gave their feelings on how the acquisitions are progressing.
BT, whose financial statement included details of the unsolicited advances made by Worldcom and GTE to MCI, said: ?In these circumstances, it is difficult to predict whether the proposed merger will proceed as planned.? Its second quarter pre-tax profits slipped by 5.7 per cent as it took on the full force of its #510 million windfall levy and the impact of MCI?s $432 million charge in its recent third quarter.
The UK telco turned in pre-tax profits of #688 million compared to #730 million a year ago. Turnover increased slightly this year to #3.9 billion from #3.7 billion. BT spent some of the quarter completing its 26 per cent acquisition of France?s Cegetel.
There was good news for Worldcom as it raked in third quarter earnings of $106 million from a loss of $60 million last year. It contributed the gain to its acquisition of MFS Communications which was completed a year ago. Operating income for the quarter leapt to $310 million.
