The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) and IBM plan to introduce a raft of joint marketing programmes later this year aimed at encouraging US resellers selling into the retail space to go with their ?network computing?-based products.
The SCO and IBM Unix Network Computing Retail Solutions initiative, announced at the SCO Forum developers conference in Santa Cruz this week, will be based around IBM?s Netfinity servers and Network Station network computers (NCs), and a version of SCO?s Unixware operating system optimised for retail.
Users will also be able to administrate their Unixware systems via IBM?s Network Station Manager, which was ported to the operating system two months ago, a move that acted as the first step to the current deal.
David McAughtry, IBM?s vice president of marketing for the network computing division, said: ?Retail is facing massive pressure on costs, but is faced with an ageing IT infrastructure based on the mainframe and dumb terminals. But the market is interested in moving to the new world.?
He continued: ?The NC enables users to keep their investment in the server and connect it to a client using IP. They can add Java and a browser front-end, then replace the back-end later. Retail is also doing the most ecommerce and this solution allows them to merge it with their existing systems the most easily.?
The two suppliers will also come up with a list of third party applications and a White Paper on how to put a retail system together at the Riscon retail show in Denver in October. IBM will not pre-install the software however, that being undertaken at the channel level.
The programme will be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere at the start of next year.
