Oracle has made a $43 million bid for Concentra to fill a gap in its ecommerce and application product lines.
Concentra, which is based in Boston, sells a configurator engine, which has traditionally been used with manufacturing applications to enable salespeople to configure products for customers.
Oracle, however, plans to broaden out the product, which is browser based, and integrate it with its Web storefront, its manufacturing applications and its front office packages. It will then make the offering available to end users so they can make their own product choices.
Ron Wohl, Oracle?s senior vice president of applications development, explained the rationale behind the acquisition at Oracle?s Openworld user conference in San Francisco today.
?This is a key part of our ecommerce strategy. We?re trying to fill in a key technology gap and we want to build and deliver product at the lowest cost. There are three elements to this. Introducing flow manufacturing to help users build mass customisation products, integrating the front office, including sales, services and the Web storefront, and the third key is Configurator,? he said.
Concentra was formerly a member of Oracle?s Alliance programme and the database supplier has already started integrating the product with its own offering. However, it expects integration with the Web storefront and applications to take about nine months. Configurator will also continue to be sold as a standalone option.
Concentra is a publicly held company and currently generates revenues of about $10 million. The majority of its 100 management and staff will transfer over to Oracle, although some administrative staff will be made redundant. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year, subject to board approval.
