Lucent plans to acquire Excel Switching a voice and IP services switching company for $1.7 billion.
Excel's products act as a bridge between circuit and packet networks. The company said there are 100 software developers, value added resellers and OEMs creating products based on its products.
The company's programmable switches are targeted at carriers entering the IP market. Lucent estimates the demand for programmable switches will grow by more than 20 per cent annually.
