The flaw in Veritas' Backup Exec for Windows and NetWare Servers and NetBackup for NetWare Media Server option would allow hackers complete control over unpatched systems by sending a specially encrypted password that would allow control.
"A public exploit has been released to the metasploit framework," said the company in a statement.
"Customers running unsupported product versions are strongly advised to upgrade to the latest supported version and apply all updates. The risk for this issue can be substantially mitigated if port 10000 is not available outside of the perimeter network."
The company has made patches available for all three software products and is urging supported users to upgrade immediately to avoid data loss.
