Ascend has launched its DSL (digital subscriber line) strategy in Europe following Lucent's acquisition of the company last month.
Alongside Cisco and Shiva, which are also aggressively targeting carriers and enterprises, Ascend believes there is massive potential in this market, although acceptance of the technology is still limited as yet.
Mark Purdon, European strategic marketing manager at Ascend, said: "We have sold an incredible amount of DSL kit in the US, partly because access to the local loop is easier there but also the cost benefits are indisputable."
He added: "We are now over the hurdle of security being compromised over a public network, with the ratification of IPSec, the Internet security protocol."
Over the next three months Ascend will be unveiling five to six new product lines under its multi-DSL strategy.
These will include a range of devices at customer sites running ATM over DSL to the end user with an ATM interface at the customer premises. "The traffic engineering and quality of service capabilities for operating a policy-based network will be the main advantages of this technology," said Purdon. There will also be frame relay and IP switching for DSL by the middle of this year.
Ascend has already begun offering DSL to service providers to provide offer managed VPN (virtual private network) services to large corporate customers.
ADSL and SDSL
The two main categories of DSL are ADSL and SDSL (asynchronous and synchronous digital subscriber line). Both use complex compression technology to pack data on to copper wires and are sometimes referred to as last-mile technologies because they are used only for connections from a telephone switching station to a home or office, not between switching stations.
