Scratch 'n sniff audio CD and CDRom discs have arrived courtesy of Sony Dadc, an affiliate of Sony.
The aroma discs drew an emormous amount of attention at this year's Milia 2000 conference in Cannes and are due to appear in stores soon.
Sony has developed a proprietary way of capturing aromas on the printed labels of 12 cm and 8 cm discs. The smell is released by rubbing the label and lasts for about 12 months.
Sony has several standard odours to choose from, including strawberry, rose, mint, hay, cappuccino and pizza. It also has a further 95 off the shelf aromas, including cedar wood, nutmeg, coconut, mango, diesel oil and, bizarrely, perspiration.
