RSA Communications has announced new High Density Modem (HDM) technology to provide Internet connection for mobile workers, remote offices and ISPs.
HDM will give lower power consumption and increase reliability compared to traditional modem rack designs, as well cutting costs by up to two thirds, RSA claims.
HDM uses a RISC processor to cut the redundancy of modem components currently found in modem banks and remote access servers. Designers will then be able to support multiple modem sessions with a minimum amount of silicon, reducing cost, space and power requirements. RSA will license software and drivers for the HDM and provide OEMs with reference designs.
Cabletron is working with RSA to develop a new range of remote access devices. "Today's high-end enterprise and ISP customers are facing increased demand for remote access," said Glenn Kime, manager of remote access product development for Cabletron. "RSA's high-density modem technology enables the design of simpler, lower cost products for corporate and ISP use."
For small and medium enterprises, the HDM will run in a Windows NT system as a PCI card with a T-1 connection to give high-bandwidth access to the corporate LAN. Replacing the traditional modem bank in the ISP market, HDM will eliminate the need RAM and ROM with the RISC-based CPU. Data pumps can also be concentrated and upgraded to digital, reducing the need for redundant pumps, individual PCM codecs and analog front ends.
"With growth of the Internet and increasing use of corporate remote access servers, there is a compelling need for new, more cost-effective strategies," said Munther Qubain, RSA president. "Currently many organisations have huge, dense modem racks to support connections. As demand grows, more racks with very expensive individual modems are added. We believe there is a smarter way to manage those connections."
