Business Objects has moved to capture a bigger share of the Internet market with the introduction of a decision support warehouse package for big business.
The Rapid Objects Web Warehouse costs #28,000 for an eight-user licence but that price, said Charles Nicholls, marketing manager at BO, includes consultation, service, training and support.
The software uses pre-built microcubes to produce reports, which are then distributed across the Internet or through Intranets to end users.
Nicholls said that a number of large corporations, including Eli Lilley, Shell and Silicon Graphics, used systems built on BO?s data warehousing software and in the next few days the company will sign a UK utility for a large number of licences.
Nicholls claimed that financial analysts Soundview had surveyed big business to ask corporates what they wanted from decision support packages. Query and reporting, at 58 per cent, represented the biggest slice of the pie, with Olap facilities at 27 per cent and data mining at 12 per cent.
He said that most corporate customers wanted not just thin clients but thick clients too, because they had mixed computing environments. ?We?re not taking a religious approach to this,? he said. ?Our software is the glue for publishing information on the Internet.?
Shell had adopted BO software because, like many other large corporations, it had executive information system products that were hard coded. ?That doesn?t suit the need of all users,? he said.
