Oxfam is close to completing the deployment of PeopleSoft Financials to its global offices, which will streamlined reporting and speed up disaster response.
The new rollout will reduce the time-intensive manual processing of data into PeopleSoft and avoid data duplication when received from its regional offices.
It previously took 20 days to close its books on the month-end accounts, making it difficult for Oxfam to be fully accountable for all of its spending.
"Our main driver was to roll the PeopleSoft general ledger functionality out in our eight regional management centres through the internet," said Heather Davies, PeopleSoft project manager for Oxfam.
Having completed an upgrade to version 8.8 for its UK systems in October 2001, the charity embarked on a project to deploy the system to its offices across the world.
"The scope of the implementation meant it was both about finance and supply chain management," said Davies.
"As a result, the time it takes for us to close our monthly reporting has reduced from closing the books on the 20th of the month to the 12th.
"Because it is a web-based system, most of data is in from most global locations by the third working day of each month and we can track our finances at a transactional level."
The central UK data warehouse also enables Oxfam to know what resources it has in its stores in the event of international disasters.
"It also allows us to synchronise pickers, packing and transportation of aid to disasters like the volcano in Goma [Congo] at the beginning of 2002," said Davies.
Oxfam also has plans to use data gathered by its PeopleSoft implementation as a knowledge base to streamline projects with indigenous peoples across its organisation.
