In the last eight months, the department's directorate of counter fraud services has tackled 180 cases of suspected fraud. It is currently investigating 200 fraud suspects, which includes 36 administrators, 18 external contractors, 25 GPs, nine hospital doctors and surgeons, 22 nursing staff, 24 dentists, 16 opticians and 27 pharmacists.The British Medical Association, the British Dental Association, the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, the Association of Optometrists and the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians all signed the charter which commits the associations to working with government on practical action to counter fraud and corruption within the NHS. Counter fraud specialists are being recruited and trained in every health authority and NHS trust, supported by a new national Counter Fraud Operational Service based in every region, health minister Lord Hunt said.
