A French Socialist government could be at loggerheads with the EC if it tries to renationalise France Telecom. A senior figure in the opposition Socialist party said it takes the view that public services should remain nationalised. However, if the party does get into power after the elections next year, it would not take back shares sold to France Telecom employees in the first tranche of privatisation, scheduled for the next few months. But it would certainly not proceed with the second tranche.
