The new advertising slogan for IBM Secure Way, ?Will a 14-year old sociopath bring my company to its knees??, seeks to hammer home a message that is still not reaching our company chiefs. A new survey by Datapro shows worrying evidence of this.
Datapro, in a new worldwide survey, found that even though 68 per cent were concerned about security threats posed by Internet access, only 54 per cent of over 1,300 respondent companies had any security policy at all. 60 per cent of European companies viewed computer viruses as a primary security threat. Incidence of computer theft in Europe is twice as prevalent as in the US, at a staggering 52 per cent of companies.
Main preventative measures used were encryption of data and firewalls (to isolate company Intranet systems from general public access), but even these were rarely used, at 15 per cent and 28 per cent respectively.
Kathleen Harvey, senior information security analyst said: ?Too many organisations take a reactive rather than proactive approach to security.? Only 26 per cent of European firms surveyed had any sort of disaster recovery plan. When the Information Security Breaches Survey was launched in March, Ian Taylor, Science and Technology Minister, commented: ?Take computer security seriously and protect your information resources and systems from theft, fraud and breakdown.? This is clearly a message that has yet to be taken seriously.
Meanwhile, hacking is on the increase. A Computacenter survey of 36 hackers makes it clear that government legislation is not the key - hackers do not fear the law, are seldom caught and rarely prosecuted. The ball lies in the court of the victim companies. 75 per cent of hackers said that company safeguards are inadequate. Hacking is facilitated by easy passwords, lack of encryption, audit trails and firewalls, bad system design and out-of-date security systems.
