Internet Portal Yahoo is rumoured to be on the acquisition trail of Broadcast.com, aggregator and broadcaster of stream media programming on the Internet.
Yahoo already has a minor stake in the streaming media company. Both companies declined to comment.
Analysts believe that after the recent soar in Internet stock valuations, Broadcast.com would be worth around $4 billion. This would be a drop in the ocean, however, to Yahoo which is currently valued at around $35 billion.
By acquiring Broadcast.com, Yahoo! would have yet another route to attract people to its portal site. Generating interesting content to pull in the punters is an ongoing chore for portal sites.
Broadcast.com, like many Internet companies, is valued at billions of dollars on paper - yet it continues to haemorrhage money. For the quarter ending December 31, 1998, it reported a net loss of $3.7 million.
Yahoo!, by contrast, is one of the few Internet companies that can actually say it is profitable.
