Oracle will launch its Parallel Server database for Windows NT clusters on 12 May, backed by a bevy of endorsements from hardware partners.
Users of NT have, until now, only been able to purchase the database supplier?s Parallel Query technology, which runs on individual NT-based symmetrical multiprocessing machines.
Oracle claimed the delay in making Parallel Server available on the platform was due to the decision to write its own database lock manager, rather than use those of different hardware vendors. A lock manager controls and manages which machine in the cluster will undertake database updates.
Although the lock manager was completed at the end of last year, Nick Gregory, Oracle?s database marketing manager, said the company had been waiting for its hardware partners to certify Parallel Server.
He added: ?We aren?t late in getting this to the marketplace. In fact, we?re the first, but the launch was delayed because we had to wait for the hardware vendors to do their certification and verify that Parallel Server worked on their platforms.?
He said that Oracle had decided to develop its own lock manager because it was expensive to write to different hardware vendors' interfaces, and the level of functionality included in these was not always consistent or adequate.
The first release of Parallel Server for NT will work in clusters of two to four machines, but a second release, due later this year, will support up to eight. By comparison, similar Parallel Server clusters under Unix or VMS can scale to dozens of boxes.
Those hardware vendors expected to endorse the offering include Compaq, Tandem, Digital Equipment, IBM and Hewlett-Packard.
