Internet service provider PSInet is to license network caching software from Inktomi to enhance its hosting service.
Traffic Server is a carrier class network cache designed to address capacity constraints in high traffic network routes. It alleviates network connections and increases network performance by storing frequently requested information in proximity to users.
Traffic Server includes support for Realnetworks' streaming video and the Usenet news (NNTP) Internet protocol and is already licensed by AOL, @Home and European broadband company Cello.
?Inktomi?s carrier class caching platform stood out as the strategic technology choice for our hosting requirements,? said Michael Mael, vice president of applications and Web services for PSInet. ?In delivering performance enhancement benefits for our next generation hosting services, Traffic Server will help us deliver a highly differentiated level of service to our customers.?
PSInet is an independent commercial Internet provider offering corporate Internet access and private IP networks, managed Internet security, and Web and database hosting services to clients including BBC, BSkyB, Sony and Warner.
PSInet plans to use the product within its Global Internet Hosting Centers to optimise the delivery of content by caching Web sites at PSInet?s worldwide hosting locations minimising the need to travel over long haul networks.
Inktomi also supplies the search technology behind services offered by Yahoo, Hotbot, CNet and Disney Online amongst others.
