Cable company Nynex Cablecomm has launched a price war on BT?s ISDN pricing. The company says it will charge a #285 connection fee in comparison to BT?s #400.
Nynex' business sales director, Jack McHale, said the basic rate ISDN market was the fastest growing part of the telephony market as more businesses were demanding sophisticated methods of telephone transfer. ?You need a goddamn comms consultant to work out BT?s complex scale of charges,? said McHale.
?With our pricing structure it is #285 connection fee and #22 a month - end of story. There are no site fees or other charges.? McHale did not consider it contradictory to be pushing towards ISDN when many of the cable companies were waiting for the development cable modems.
?We are developing cable modems with Motorola, however the unit cost for the first generation of the technology is too high. Even when they are introduced into the market there will be room for two different types of technology,? McHale said.
A BT spokesperson pointed out that Nynex, which provides a service to Manchester, the South Coast, Brighton, Portsmouth and Wessex, was unable to provide a nationwide ISDN service - although it will soon be linked to a national network via its participation in C&W's UK cable group. He added that the cost of installing an ISDN line was more than #1,000 and Oftel had assessed its pricing as the lowest in Europe.
?It is an interesting move, but we have just announced our price structure and we have no plans to change it,? he said.
