Lucent?s voice messaging unit, Octel, is recruiting partners for a new channel, set up to push its recently announced Unified Messaging server.
The three-tier messaging channel programme is targeting a potential $2 billion in revenue from selling Octel?s recently launched system, which pulls together email and voicemail into one box.
In the UK, Octel wants around 12 Messaging Integrator Members - the top tier of the structure - to help corporates install and support the Microsoft Exchange-based Unified Messaging server. The product allows users to 'read' email and voicemail in one place, and can redirect faxes or email attachments to new fax numbers.
The company has already signed Digital Equipment as a global Integrator Member and has moved its original five Octel Solution Alliance Members to the new programme.
Integrator Members need to have expertise in data networking, Microsoft NT and Exchange, said Octel. They will be expected to install and support the products for customers and also work alongside Messaging Integrator Sales Associates, the next tier down in the channel structure.
The Associates could be telecomms equipment vendors that are more experienced in the voice world, Octel explained. The bottom tier will be Teaming Partners that could be independent software vendors of fax or workflow products.
Octel was acquired by Lucent last year to boost its computer integrated telephony offering. It did run an Octel Solution Alliance Member programme but partners were only able to sell specific products. Under the new scheme partners will be able to sell Lucent?s other data products.
