With the launch of the Document WorkCentre XD100, XD102 and XD104, Xerox hopes to capitalise on its leadership in the copier market to make an impact in the SME office printing arena. Xerox claims the products have the convenience of walk-up copiers but can also be connected to a Windows PC to be used as a laser printer.
Angele Boyd, vice president peripherals research with IDC, said the old model of print-then-copy has been replaced with distribute-then-print since the advent of Email, hitting copier companies like Xerox hard.
The XD series ships from #779 to #839, which is around 25% cheaper than the combined cost of separate copiers and printers, according to Xerox.
Digital technology improves reliability and image quality especially on documents containing photographs, halftone and those with coloured backgrounds.
Also featured is an improved reduction and zoom range which now goes from 50% to 200% in a compact footprint.
Karen Blanchflower, personal products business manager for Xerox Channels Group, said: "This new category of digital laser copier printers will redefine the personal copier marketplace in terms of convenience and flexibility, and further strengthen the Xerox presence."
IDC research shows that demand for these kind of multifunctional devices is closing the gap on printers in medium to large workgroups. The market for multifunctional devices (MFDs)has grown by 53% in volume terms over the last year to reach around two million units, compared to 19% growth in the printer market.
This launch marks another step in Xerox's transition from analogue to digital across its entire product line. The XD range offers 10 copies per minute for conventional copying and eight pages per minute for Windows printing.
