Hitachi Internetworking will introduce a switch that bridges the ATM and Ethernet worlds before the end of the year. The HiSpeed 160 edge switch provides 12 10/100Mbps ports and two ATM uplinks. The ATM connections can form either two separate connections or one redundant backbone connection. LAN emulation inside the HS160 provides the link between the packet-based Ethernet ports and the 155Mbps, cell-based ATM OC-3 ports. The HS160, which will start at #7,314, or about #600 per port, can be configured as a routing switch, with routing performance in silicon reaching 220,000 packets per second. The switch will route IP, IPX and AppleTalk traffic and includes Web-based management.
