Nine months after Symantec sold its networking unit to Hewlett Packard, it is to re-enter the business in a small way with a monitoring product for antivirus solutions.
The product, System Center, is an add-on to the company's security software, Norton Antivirus Solutions, which in turn can plug into Microsoft's core NT network management toolset, Management Console.
But company officials stressed System Center was designed only to monitor, distribute and update the Norton product, and did not signal a broader move back into network management. Last year, Symantec sold its Norton Administrator Suite of management tools and its networking business unit to HP.
