A week of activity from Olivetti Computers Worldwide has seen the firm sign up a server distributor, launch two notebooks and complete the restructuring of its management team.
OCW, which is looking to recruit 250 resellers by next March, announced a deal with specialist server distributor Norwood Adam, which will sell the company's NetStrada 400 NT server systems.
The company believes that its best opportunity for growth lies in the high-end server market, especially since competitor ALR was bought by Gateway last year. Ian Davidson, Olivetti's UK marketing manager, told PC Week: "ALR seems to have lost its way a little recently, especially at the leading edge of the server business. Olivetti produces good-quality machines. Most people don't know that we've been building servers since 1980."
Olivetti employs specialist sales people to campaign the cause of its corporate desktops and servers, and the company operates a build-to-order model, but all orders are fulfilled through resellers. Davidson said: "We're completely committed to the channel. Building systems is what we're good at, and that's what we intend to focus on."
The additions to the Xtrema notebook range are the P26S and the 323S, priced at #1,129 and #1,299 respectively. The 323S runs on a 233MHz PII and the P26S uses a 266MHz Pentium MMX. Both machines feature 12.1in TFT screens, 24x CD-ROM drives and 2.1Gb hard drives, and are shipping now.
All notebooks in the Olivetti range are covered by a desk-to-desk warranty, under which the company promises to collect, repair and return the machine to the customer anywhere in the world within five days.
