A startup security company has claimed that within a few years, all data moving over the internet could be in an encrypted form.
Andes Networks said that not enough information on the internet is encrypted, and that at the moment only about seven per cent of web traffic is secure. This is because of a lack of encryption speed, which usually slows traffic by as much as 50 per cent.
The company said it has developed a speedy encryption processing scheme which can beat the problem, increasing the performance of encryption engines to over 10 times that which is available currently, while implementation costs for such security technology have hit a welcome low.
The encryption scheme will work on the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) level, the standard protocol for secure communications and authentication over the internet, which is built as standard into every web browser.
The scheme would place an SSL accelerator in key positions across the internet infrastructure, such as internet service providers or data centres.
The SSL accelerator's sole job would be to encrypt data passing through or leaving the centre, and to decrypt data entering. The end users' desktop would also decrypt the data at its final destination and encrypt it at its origin on the host machine. The company hopes to be rolling out kit later this year.
Paul Gordon, chief executive at Andes, said that the accelerated system can perform 15,000 RSA operations per second, a claim "which redefines the standards of SSL processing". In addition the accelerator claims to handle 5000 SSL clients per second, he said.
