NEC has introduced a global strategy to sell servers which it claims will wipe Compaq off the network server map.
The company today introduced its strategy for the coming year in conjunction with subsidiaries Packard-Bell, Zenith Data Systems (ZDS) and Groupe Bull and claimed it had already toppled Compaq from the pole position in Japan.
Michel Motro, European VP of ZDS, said: ?We?re attacking Compaq. Now we have a worldwide sales strategy that encompasses NEC Japan, NEC US, and Zenith Bull. We want 20 per cent worldwide and and we?ve already achieved half of that.?
He said that corporations wanted NEC server technology because the semiconductor company worked closely with Intel and Microsoft to produce systems, including an eight-way SMP server. That Intel-based product uses technology unavailable to Compaq, claimed Motro.
He said the alliance had already beaten Compaq in Japan. ?Step one was Japan where we overturned them,? he said. ?We have a full line from a one processor Pentium server to an eight-way Pentium Pro machine which is rack-mounted.?
Compaq will have trouble beating them despite its acquisition of Tandem because NEC and Groupe Bull already had systems engineers who sold straight into the mainframe market.
Motro admitted the sales models were different across the world. ?In the US, we launched NEC Direct for servers,? he said. ?In Europe we will do this through ZDS indirect channels as well as using the Bull route to market.?
He further attacked Compaq by saying his company?s systems were modular. ?We have only one type of power supply unit so you can hot swap hard drives and upgrade your machines between themselves as well as swap motherboards.?
The eight-way SMP machine is already available in Japan and will be available here as soon as NEC-ZDS gets approvals from software companies including SAP, said Motro.
Compaq was unavailable for comment at press time.
