Wireless data adoption is growing strongly in the business environment but is failing to show the 'hockey stick' growth curve that has been widely expected, according to research.
Analyst firm In-Stat/MDR found that implementation of wireless data networks in corporations is actually greater than many observers might expect. But the extent and complexity of wireless networks within each organisation varies significantly, the analyst said.
"Many companies have simple 'point' solutions (one device, one service, one application) in place today, while other deployments are far more intricate," explained Becky Diercks, director with In-Stat/MDR, in a statement.
"It is heartening to see the majority of current wireless data users plan expansion within the next few years, so growth will come not just from new installations but also organically from a greater number of subscribers within existing user companies."
In-Stat's report, Wireless Data in the Business Environment - Vertical Market Drivers and Opportunities warned service providers that hard work would be required to succeed in a wireless data market that has shifted back to focus on vertical markets with varied, diverse and often complex needs, rather than horizontal applications such as email.
The study also found that the sheer size of companies in vertical markets such as manufacturing meant that, although overall penetration within the industry is lower compared to others, the actual number of wireless data subscribers is still higher than other vertical market segments.
And the report revealed that, while companies are currently relying on mobile phones as wireless access devices of choice, the forward trend was to switch to notebooks with wireless modems.
