The prospective $24 billion merger between BT and MCI has been given the green light by the US Justice Department. Both companies are now waiting for consent from the US Federal Communications Commission, which is expected to announce its ruling by the end of summer.
However, the Justice Department said it would add more conditions to a court consent decree, which was arranged after MCI acquired its 20 per cent stake in BT in 1994. The additions would ensure prices remain competitive for US consumers.
