Lloyds Treasury, a division of the Lloyds TSB banking group, is implementing what is believed to be one of the first financial packages in the city running on Microsoft Windows NT Server.
The application, which will be used to carry out complex analysis of financial data for the whole of the division, is due to go live by the fourth quarter of the year.
The ambitious project is being carried out under a #350,000 deal with software developer The Dodge Group. The application uses Dodge's OpenSeries Financial Data warehouse software, running on top of Microsoft's SQL Server.
Barry Arnold, senior manager of financial control at Lloyds Treasury, said a key benefit of the system was that it allowed staff to run more detailed reports on transactions than was previously possible.
The decision to adopt an NT-based solution follows an edict throughout Lloyds Treasury division to standardise on a single operating system environment, Windows NT 4.0. The group plans to put NT 4.0 on all its servers, and migrate Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 clients to NT 4.0 Workstation.
Alan Hambrook, president of The Dodge Group, said the project could become the acid test of NT's scalability, which has come in for some heavy criticism.
"Other blue chip companies have told us they will be watching the results closely," said Hambrook.
The system gathers treasury data on a Tandem mainframe. The data is then replicated onto SQL Server, where OpenSeries can be used to drill-down queries ranging from summarised financial balances to detailed accounting transactions.
The system runs NT 4.0 Server and SQL Server 6.5 on a four-way Pentium Pro 200MHz Compaq Proliant server with 1Gb of memory. The database is expected to have a capacity of 25Gb, equating to roughly 30 months worth of monthly balance statements.
Speaking on the performance of Windows NT/SQL Server, Mark Newton, sales manager at The Dodge Group, said: "We've been really surprised with the performance. It is comparable to low-end Unix."
Newton added that OpenSeries will process up to 300,000 transactions a day, including calculations of average balance, daily re-evaluation and the generation of daily management reports.
