The British Computer Society (BCS) is offering IT departments a new standards-based web solution to keep track of staff skills.
BCS Skills Manager, to be launched next month, allows companies to build IT job descriptions based on a standard framework and assess their current portfolio of skills, including any gaps that may exist.
John Gwynne, product manager at the BCS, said: "Skills Manager furthers our aims of promoting professional development and standard job roles throughout the industry."
The system is built on BCS's new enhanced IT skills framework, SFIAplus. This combines the government-backed Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) with an updated version of the BCS's existing Industry Structure Model.
"SFIAplus defines skills, roles and a framework for IT jobs," said Gwynne.
"Organisations can use standard building blocks for job descriptions, individual workers' skills can be mapped to required IT roles and you can easily identify where you have either a surfeit or a lack of particular skills."
The BCS claims the system will reduce staff turnover and help organisations build more effective teams. "Businesses can make better use of the skills they have by making them more visible," said Gwynne.
"They can identify any shortfalls and improve job satisfaction for team members by putting them into roles that better match their experience and aspirations."
The product is based on Enterprise Skills Infrastructure (ESI) technology developed by skills management specialist Infobasis.
Ashley Wheaton, chief executive of Infobasis, said: "The government says it is vital that businesses introduce better standards of reporting when it comes to their human assets.
"We believe making this technology available to a wider market is a key step towards that goal."
He added that ESI covered elements of knowledge management, human resources and learning management systems, as well as some of the functionality of full-blown enterprise resource planning.
The BCS's Gwynne said: "Infobasis has effectively given us a very powerful front end for our standard. This is an off-the-shelf, web-hosted solution that businesses can start using straight away with minimal training."
The BCS believes the system will prove most attractive to organisations employing between 25 and 300 IT staff.
