Cabletron's recently formed network management company, Aprisma, plans to add optical features to its Spectrum product to lure service providers over to the traditionally enterprise-oriented system.
Aprisma was one of the businesses that Cabletron created last month when it split itself into four. The company's Spectrum network management offering has historically been targeted at corporate customers, but Aprisma executives believe the company's new found independence will enable it to target service providers.
Trent Waterhouse, Aprisma's marketing director, said that by 2003 the company hopes to derive 60 per cent of its sales from service providers and the remainder from enterprise customers compared with today's ratio of 30:70 per cent.
As a result, Aprisma will add optical functionality to Spectrum this year in an attempt to enable carriers and large businesses to manage fibre optic data on top of traditional ISDN and frame relay traffic.
"Spectrum will leverage fault management to identify outages in optical as well as IP switching components," said Waterhouse.
But he denied that the new focus means that Spectrum would be irrelevant to companies in the future, saying that the product is going back to its internet roots. Spectrum was initially used to manage the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency's DARPAnet in 1990, which spawned the world wide web.
Aprisma also hopes to announce development agreements with a number of optical equipment manufacturers that have signed up to use the Spectrum applications by June.
To further its optical ambitions, Aprisma has joined the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), which counts equipment manufacturers and telcos among its members. The OIF aims to promote the global development of optical networking products.
Waterhouse said membership of the OIF would enable Aprisma to keep up to date with what is happening with other manufacturers and emerging optical networking standards.
Separately, Cabletron's Layer 2 and 3 switching firm, Enterasys Networks, said it has pinpointed Europe as a target market and appointed Jim Sims - Cabletron's former head of Latin America - as president of Enterasys Europe, the Middle East and Africa (Emea).
Enterasys said that the "majority" of Cabletron's existing workforce in the region will join Enterasys Emea, although it provided no specific numbers.
