Hall-Mark, the $700 million US midrange hardware distributor, has confirmed its intention to set up in Europe this year.
In an interview with US trade magazine 'Computer Reseller News', Hall-Mark president George Smith said the company was consulting Digital Equipment, Hewlett-Packard and IBM - its major suppliers - on which countries to target.
It refused to say where it will open first, citing confidential acquisition discussions. But according to UK sources, the company has entered takeover talks with Bytech Systems, a privately-held UK distributor of IBM/RS/6000s.
Hall-Mark is a wholly owned subsidiary of Avnet, the $5 billion US electronic components distributor.
