Oracle has asked 60 of its 1,400 UK consultants to seek 'other jobs' in the company, a month after cutting 30 sales jobs.
But the firm is vigorously denying rumours that hundreds more job cuts are on the way.
The company describes persistent talk of heavy redundancies as 'completely untrue,' but admits it is attempting to streamline its operations. Added to the casualties revealed by Computing three weeks ago, the cuts represent two per cent of Oracle's 4,500 UK staff.
Nick Barley, vice president for marketing at Oracle, said the redundancies represent the total number planned in the UK "for the moment". "Ebusiness is causing all companies to look at the skills they have," he added.
A source close to Oracle insisted that the vendor has not finished culling jobs. "There will be more redundancies in the UK. Oracle is certainly cost-cutting," he said.
Independent strategy consultant Clive Longbottom said: "Oracle is looking at its financial situation, as it needs to be leaner to fight off Microsoft's SQL Server 7. It needs to lower operating costs and the only way is to get rid of people. We're looking at 2,000 redundancies worldwide."
Oracle said recently it had no plans for redundancies beyond the original set, and refuted suggestions that it had plans to lay off more staff. "The number is 30 as per our statement," said a spokeswoman.
Last month Computing exposed an internal Oracle memo detailing cutbacks, including a freeze on hiring and replacing staff unless directly authorised by European executive vice president Pier Carlo Falotti.
Oracle's UK operation is historically the second biggest outside its US headquarters, with an emphasis on services not typical of Oracle as a whole.
