Toshiba is to split into six separate companies within one holding firm over the next few years.
The Japanese giant lost $27 million in the last fiscal year, and profits plummeted by 89 per cent to $53 million. This has forced it to reorganise and shed more than 2,000 staff by April 1999.
Last week Toshiba's air-conditioning appliances division was formed into a joint venture with United Technologies Carrier Group.
