The Consumers Association is calling for a reorganisation of regulatory bodies because of its concerns about protection for consumers who wish to shop over the Internet.
In its recent report, Consumer Transactions on the Internet, it stated that the ITC (which regulates television) Oftel (which regulates telecoms) and the Office of Fair Trading should be amalgamated into one regulatory authority.
"Yes it's radical," explains Alan Stephens, editor of Which? Online. "The problem is they are all dealing with overlapping areas in relation to the Internet."
The report points out that it's very early days for online commerce and states that consumers should beware of buying products from overseas companies due to limited consumer protection.
The report is available from the Consumers' Association on (0171) 830 6000.
