Apple has declared its new online store a success with 4.4 million hits and $0.5 million of orders in its first 12 hours of business on Monday, making it the latest company to clamber on to the electronic commerce bandwaggon.
The Apple Store was opened to US customers at noon on Monday. It can be accessed from the Apple home page. The store is part of an overhauled distribution and sales strategy announced by interim chief executive Steve Jobs at the Apple event in Cupertino this week. "We're thrilled by this immediate customer response to our store," he said.
The company is attempting to emulate the success of rival Dell Computer in online sales. Dell currently claims to sell $3 million a day over the Net, up from $1 million a day in March.
