China is catching up with the US and Japan in numbers of internet users.
In a recent press conference The China Internet Network Information Center said that the number of internet users had increased in China by almost 12 million people over the past six months.
And according to newspaper reports the number of internet users in China has reached 45.8 million. This is despite government crackdowns on internet cafes and strict rules on internet use.
Beijing's English-language newspaper China Daily is starting to demand that special internet cafes for teenagers should be opened.
The newspaper said: "The internet is a double-edged sword. It is an educational aid but indulgence in online games, violence, and porn certainly does more harm than good to children's growth."
Internet cafes are seen as a way of boosting use, as only an estimated 30 per cent of the population can afford computers.
But this figure is not across the board, as some areas of China have large numbers of internet users.
The China Internet Network Information Center added that it was not only wealthy people who used the internet, because 37.8 per cent of users surveyed earn less than 500 yen ($60) a month.
