Psion has canned plans to launch Bluetooth products this autumn and has said it will lay off 250 staff as it restructures its Psion Digital division and focuses more on corporate customers.
"In the light of the slower than anticipated establishment of a mass market for Bluetooth products, Psion Digital will not launch its Bluetooth personal digital assistant or range of Bluetooth connectivity products planned for the second half of 2001," the company said.
Retained Psion Digital staff will instead focus on creating "innovative mobile networking products and solutions in high value markets". Psion axed 100 UK jobs in March.
Bluetooth, once the talk of the technology industry, is in danger of becoming toothless compared to its less glamorous cousin, the 802.11b wireless local area network technology.
The company said it would restructure Psion Digital because it had continued to perform poorly in "weak and oversupplied markets for handheld computers" and that "further commoditisation" of these markets is expected next year.
David Levin, chief executive at Psion, said: "Trading in Psion Digital has been difficult. As a result of this we are taking major action to reduce our cost base."
Revenues for Psion Digital were £36m for the first half of 2001, less than half the £77m for the same period in 2000. Overall, provisional results show a five per cent increase in half-year revenues to £99m from £94m, boosted by the strong performance of its Psion Teklogic enterprise division.
